The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander

This book is an oldie but a goody. The Book of Three, one of my summer reading choices is the first book in The Chronicles of Prydain series preceding The Black Cauldron which we have in the Media Center. It was first published in 1964 and is still in print today. The story even provided a majority of the plot for the 1985 Disney movie, The Black Cauldron (despite having the second book's title). This book tells the tale of the assistant pig-keeper Taran, who embarks on a heroes journey with a number of twists and turns from new friends, to new dangers, to new worlds that one could only dream of visiting. This story can be praised for its character development in the protagonist, Taran, and its use of progressive females like Eilonwy (who is introduced later).

Personally, I think if one is a fan of Star Wars, Harry Potter or others like them, this is the book for you.
